Semeru, Active volcano in Indonesia
Semeru, also known as Mount Semeru, is the highest mountain on the island of Java and one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.
Its name derived from the Hindu-Buddhist mythical mountain of Meru or Sumeru, the abode of gods.
In local folklore, Semeru is believed to be the home of the god Brahma and is considered sacred.
Despite its active status, it's a popular destination for mountaineering.
It's famous for its regular eruptions every 20 minutes to an hour.
