Semeru, Active stratovolcano in East Java, Indonesia.
Semeru is an active stratovolcano on the island of Java, Indonesia, and is the tallest peak on the island, reaching about 3,676 meters (12,060 feet) above sea level. It sits within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and is surrounded by steep slopes of andesite rock, dense forests, and volcanic terrain.
Semeru formed during the Pleistocene and has been one of Java's most active volcanoes throughout recorded history. A major eruption in December 2022 sent an ash column about 16 kilometers into the sky, drawing international attention to its ongoing activity.
In Javanese tradition, the mountain is seen as the home of the gods and remains a place of deep respect for many local communities. Visitors walking through the surrounding area may come across small offerings placed along the trail, a practice that continues to this day.
A permit from the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park office is required to hike, and registration with local authorities is also necessary before setting out. Conditions on the mountain can change fast due to weather and volcanic activity, so checking local advisories on the day of your visit is a good habit.
The crater releases bursts of steam and gas roughly every 20 minutes, a rhythm that hikers can watch from a designated safe viewpoint. This regular pattern makes it one of the few active volcanoes in the world where volcanic behavior follows such a predictable cycle.
