Pura Taman Ayun, Hindu temple in Mengwi, Indonesia.
Pura Taman Ayun is a Hindu temple in Mengwi comprising twenty-seven structures with tall pagodas dedicated to various deities. The complex is surrounded by lotus ponds and fish ponds that add a serene element to the overall composition.
The temple was founded in 1634 by the first king of Mengwi, I Gusti Ngurah Agung Shakti, and originally served as the royal family's place of worship. This construction represents an important example of early Balinese royal architecture.
The temple follows traditional Balinese architecture with three distinct sections, each separated by ornately carved gates that reflect religious hierarchy. The layout guides visitors through increasingly sacred spaces, from the public outer grounds to the restricted inner sanctuary where ceremonies take place.
The temple is located northwest of the main city and opens daily to visitors, with comfortable walking shoes and light clothing recommended. Finding the entrance is straightforward, and basic information is available on-site for orientation.
The entire temple complex sits on a river island encircled by a large moat that functions as part of the local irrigation system. This natural water barrier has protected the site from flooding for centuries.
