Green School, private school in Bali
Green School is a private international school located in the Badung regency of Bali, Indonesia. It serves children from early childhood through secondary level, offering a curriculum that mixes standard academic subjects with outdoor and project-based activities.
Green School was founded in 2008 by John and Cynthia Hardy, a jewelry designer couple who were inspired by a film about environmental awareness. They started with a small community of families and built the campus using local materials, mainly bamboo sourced from the surrounding region.
Green School is known for its buildings made almost entirely from bamboo, which gives the campus a look unlike any other school. Lessons often take place in open-sided structures surrounded by rice fields and jungle, making the natural world part of everyday learning.
The school sits in a rural part of Badung, near the Ayung River, and is easiest to reach by private vehicle or rented scooter. Access to the grounds is generally limited to registered visitors, so it is worth contacting the school ahead of time before planning a trip.
The largest structure on the campus, known as the Heart of School, is a domed hall built entirely from bamboo without a single nail. Bamboo was chosen partly because it grows back very quickly in the region, making it a material that can be harvested without long-term damage to the land.
