Batakan Beach, Beach in Panyipatan, Indonesia

Batakan Beach is a brown-sand beach in Batakan village, Panyipatan, Tanah Laut, South Kalimantan. Its water is not very clear and small waves break along the shore. Coconut palms and tall, densely growing casuarina trees line the edge, a fishing settlement stands to one side, and Mount Meratus rises green in the distance.

The name Batakan comes from a story of two seafaring brothers who travelled by jukung, a small canoe, up the Saluang river; a wave swept them ashore on the land that now bears the name. The people of Desa Batakan in Panyipatan, Tanah Laut, mostly work as fishermen.

Local fishermen conduct maritime ceremonies each July or August to give thanks for the ocean's resources and request safe passage. These celebrations show how deeply the community's life is connected to the sea.

The beach lies about 40 km by road from Pelaihari, the Tanah Laut regency capital, and roughly 125 km from Banjarmasin, with a good road most of the way. Near the entrance a monument splits the road and a large gate marks the site. Facilities include freshwater showers, a car park for hundreds of vehicles, simple fan-cooled rooms and camping spots.

Batakan Beach is one of two beaches of that name in Desa Batakan: the older beach, and Pantai Batakan Baru, opened in 2020 and managed by the BKSDA of South Kalimantan province. The newer one covers 10.5 hectares along about 1 km of shore and is known for photo spots.
