IMO 9648714, Floating natural gas facility in Browse Basin, Western Australia.
IMO 9648714 is a floating liquefied natural gas production unit anchored in the Browse Basin off the northwest coast of Australia. The facility extracts gas from subsea wells, chills it into liquid form and loads it onto tanker ships without needing onshore terminals.
The facility was built between 2012 and 2017 in a South Korean shipyard before being towed across the Indian Ocean to its final location. It began operations in 2018 and has since supplied liquefied gas mainly to Asian markets.
The facility represents advancement in Australian energy infrastructure, generating 350 direct jobs and contributing to regional industrial development.
The facility sits about 200 kilometers off the Australian coast in a zone regularly swept by tropical cyclones. Visits are not possible for safety reasons, and access is limited to supply vessels and helicopters.
The platform is longer than four football fields placed end to end and could accommodate more than 10,000 people on its surface. Twelve massive anchor chains hold it permanently in place above the seabed.
