Mirima National Park

Mirima National Park, National park near Kununurra, Australia.

Description

Mirima National Park is a protected area in Western Australia featuring dramatic sandstone cliffs and escarpments that rise sharply from the ground. The landscape consists of red rock walls that shift in color as light moves across them throughout the day, creating an ever-changing visual experience.

History

This area formed over 300 million years ago beneath a prehistoric sea, with sandstone layers building up from creek sediments and wind-blown sand. That ancient geological process created the red rock walls that visitors encounter on the trails today.

Culture

The Miriwoong people have lived on this land for countless generations, gathering food and materials from the landscape while performing ceremonies that connect them to the place. Visitors walking through the park today can sense how deeply rooted this relationship runs through the rock formations and water sources scattered across the terrain.

Practical

The park is easy to explore on foot using several marked walking trails that loop through the area. Plan to arrive early in the day so you can enjoy the best light on the rocks and avoid the midday heat.

Did you know?

A dark layer of algae and lichens coats the sandstone surfaces and significantly slows down their erosion. This living coating creates subtle but visible patterns on the rock walls that many visitors walk past without noticing.
