Wakatobi National Park
Wakatobi National Park, Marine national park in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia
The park extends across 13,900 square kilometers of marine territory, containing numerous coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests along its coastlines.
The area transitioned from a marine conservation zone in 1996 to receive national park status in 2002, marking a significant step in Indonesian marine protection.
The Bajo people maintain their traditional maritime lifestyle within the park boundaries, building elevated houses above water and sustaining themselves through fishing practices.
Visitors access the park through Matahora Airport on Wangi-Wangi island, followed by boat transfers to reach specific locations within the protected waters.
The waters contain 942 fish species and 750 coral species, representing 76 percent of all known coral varieties within this single marine habitat.
