Bruny Island, Island destination in Tasmania, Australia

Bruny Island extends over 362 square kilometers, divided into North and South sections connected by a narrow strip of land called The Neck.

Aboriginal Tasmanians inhabited this territory for over 40,000 years before European explorer Tobias Furneaux reached Adventure Bay in March 1773.

The island maintains its Aboriginal name Lunawanna-alonnah, now represented in two local settlements that preserve the indigenous connection to the land.

Access to the island requires a 20-minute vehicle ferry journey from Kettering terminal, located 33 kilometers south of Hobart.

The Cape Bruny Lighthouse operated as Australia's longest continuously staffed lighthouse from 1838 until its automation in 1993.
