Wynyard, Administrative division in northern Tasmania, Australia.
Wynyard is an administrative division in northern Tasmania that spreads along the northwestern coastal shore and includes residential neighborhoods, farming country, and the Inglis River valley. The area is managed by the Waratah-Wynyard Council as a unified local government zone with multiple community centers.
The region started as the Alexandria settlement in the 1850s, founded by three brothers named Alexander, and was reorganized in 1882 into its current administrative structure. This reshaping transformed the area into the modern local government zone it remains today.
The division maintains multiple educational facilities, including Table Cape Primary School, Wynyard High School, and St Brigid's Catholic School serving local communities.
The area is easy to explore by car, with a main road connecting the coastal zone to the inland areas. Visitors will find several towns along the way with basic services and accommodation options.
Fossil Bluff within the division holds important remains of prehistoric marsupials from Australia's early past. One of the country's oldest known marsupial fossils was discovered at this very location.
