Lake Wendouree, Recreational reservoir in Ballarat, Australia
Lake Wendouree is a man-made reservoir at the center of Ballarat with a long stretch of water running through the city. The lake area includes several sections and open water, surrounded by lawns, gardens, and walking paths.
The area was originally a natural swamp that was transformed into an artificial lake during the gold rush of 1851. This change allowed better water storage for the rapidly growing mining town.
The name Wendouree comes from an Aboriginal word meaning wendaaree, while early European settlers called it Yuille's Swamp after a local landowner. Today it serves as a meeting place where locals walk, relax, and gather along the water's edge.
A loop path of about 6 kilometers circles the water and works well for walking or jogging. You'll find grilling areas, playgrounds, and public restrooms scattered around the shoreline.
The lake hosted rowing and canoeing events during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. This international sporting event gave it a special place in Australia's sports history.
