Mount Warrenheip, Extinct volcano near Ballarat, Australia
Mount Warrenheip is an extinct volcano near Ballarat in Victoria, standing at approximately 746 meters above sea level. The mountain features a prominent crater that is breached on its northern side and sits within a forested nature conservation reserve.
The volcano last erupted approximately 2.53 million years ago and played a key role in shaping Victoria's Newer Volcanic Province. This eruption was a defining moment in forming the geological features of the region.
The name Warrenheip originates from the Wathaurong language and refers to fern vegetation that once covered the mountain slopes. Local people and visitors can still observe this plant connection in the greenery surrounding the peak.
The summit is accessible via Mount Warrenheip Road through the forested reserve and is marked by telecommunications towers at the top. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and changing weather conditions when exploring the area.
This mountain is one of the few places in the region where snow falls regularly, around seven days per year. The temperatures remain several degrees cooler than in nearby Ballarat, creating a distinctly different climate at the summit.
