Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Sports stadium in Melbourne central business district, Australia
Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is a sports stadium in Melbourne central business district, Australia. The roof consists of a lattice structure with triangular elements that curves over most seating areas while letting daylight reach the grass.
The project arose from 2007 onward at the initiative of the Victorian Government and was the first large stadium with a rectangular pitch in Melbourne. It was completed in 2010 after three years of construction.
Locals often call the stadium AAMI Park, after an earlier sponsor, or simply refer to it as the rectangular stadium to set it apart from the oval cricket ground nearby. Football and rugby fans flock here on match days, turning the surroundings into a sea of jerseys and chants.
Seating areas accommodate around 30,000 spectators, and foundations were built to support possible expansion later on. Entry points and stairways are spread around the stadium, shortening the walk to individual sections.
The exterior framework carries several thousand LED lamps that glow in changing colors at night and can be programmed depending on the event. This light installation is visible from much of the sports precinct and often serves as a landmark.
