The Snowy Mountains Scheme is one of the most complex hydroelectric power stations in the world.
Construction began in 1949 and was completed in 1974, involving more than 100,000 people from over 30 countries.
The scheme significantly contributed to Australia's post-war development and multiculturalism.
It provides around 2,100 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, which is about 67% of all renewable energy in Australia.
The Scheme diverts the flow of the Snowy River through two major tunnel systems to the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers.
