Parliament House

Parliament House is a parliament building on Capital Hill in Canberra, Australia, containing 4700 rooms across three floors with a flagpole rising 81 meters above the roof. The building covers a large area and integrates artworks and public spaces that are accessible during visits.

The Federal Parliament of Australia moved to this site in 1988 after sitting in Melbourne until 1927 and then in the Old Parliament House. The move marked the completion of a long planning process for a permanent parliamentary home in the capital.

The House of Representatives chamber displays green tones that recall eucalyptus leaves, while the Senate chamber carries red hues reflecting British parliamentary traditions. This color choice links Australian nature with Commonwealth heritage in a space visitors can observe today from the public galleries.

Visitors can reach several areas through guided tours, including the marble foyer, the Great Hall, and the public galleries of both chambers. Tours provide access to the main public areas, with security screening conducted at the entrance.

The design allows visitors to walk on the grass-covered roof, placing citizens physically above their political representatives. This architectural choice reflects a democratic principle that becomes visible in the building form itself.
