St Matthew's Church, Dunedin

St Matthew's Church is an Anglican place of worship in Dunedin built with bluestone and Port Chalmers breccia elements. The interior is defined by large octagonal piers that separate the central nave from the side aisles, creating a spacious worship environment.

The foundation stone was laid in 1873, and architect William Mason completed this Gothic Revival structure. The project represented a major commitment by the local Anglican community to establish their permanent presence in the growing city.

The congregation built this place as a center for Anglican worship and community life in Dunedin, which continues today. The stained glass windows and interior design create a reflective space where visitors can sense the spiritual traditions that have shaped the building.

The building is located in the City Rise area and is easily reached on foot from central Dunedin. Visitors should check opening times in advance, as regular services occur at set times and access outside these hours may be limited.

The congregation declined the opportunity to become Dunedin's cathedral, which role was given to St Paul's instead. This decision allowed the building to maintain its character as a traditional parish church without the responsibilities that came with cathedral status.
