That Wānaka Tree, Remarkable tree in Lake Wanaka, New Zealand
The lone willow tree stands directly in the waters of Lake Wanaka, surrounded by the mountains of the Otago region at 300 meters elevation.
The tree originated from a fence post around 1939, when a branch took root at the lake's edge and gradually developed into its current form.
Social media followers share thousands of photographs using the hashtag ThatWanakaTree, making it one of New Zealand's most captured natural elements.
Visitors reach the tree location through a 15-minute walk along Lake Wanaka's shore, with sunrise offering the most favorable photography conditions.
In March 2020, vandals cut several branches from the tree, leading to increased protection measures and community support for its preservation.
