Travis Wetland, Nature reserve in Coastal-Burwood Community, New Zealand.
Travis Wetland is a nature reserve of 116 hectares of wetland terrain in Coastal-Burwood Community with gravel pathways, boardwalks, and multiple observation points. The layout allows visitors to explore the water areas and surrounding vegetation at an easy pace.
The reserve came into being when Christchurch City Council purchased the final 60 hectares in 1996 after a 20-year effort to prevent residential development. This acquisition protected the site from expanding suburbs.
The information kiosk blends elements of traditional whare architecture with Asian aquatic pavilion designs, showing how local and international influences shape this place. Visitors notice this cultural mix in the building details and materials as they explore.
The site opens daily from 8 AM to 8 PM with the main entrance and parking at 280 Beach Road in Burwood. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to walk the different pathways and visit the observation points.
The reserve holds roughly 80 percent of native wetland plant species that grew here before European settlement. At the same time it provides habitat for 53 bird species in Christchurch.
