Christchurch Gondola, Cable car system on Port Hills in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The Christchurch Gondola is a cable car on the Port Hills at the edge of Christchurch, New Zealand, linking Heathcote Valley to a summit station on Mount Cavendish. The route climbs steadily over open hillside, giving riders a gradually widening view of the coast, the city, and the flat plains beyond.
The gondola opened in 1992, offering a new way to reach the summit of Mount Cavendish without walking up the hill. Earthquakes in the early 2010s reshaped parts of the Port Hills and left visible marks on the landscape that passengers can still notice from the cabin.
At the top of Mount Cavendish, visitors gather on an open viewing platform that looks out over the city on one side and the harbour on the other. Many people use it as a starting point for the walking and biking trails that fan out along the ridge.
The base station is in Heathcote Valley, and the ride to the top takes around ten minutes with cabins running regularly throughout the day. Visitors planning to walk or cycle along the ridge after arriving should bring suitable footwear, as some trails can be rough underfoot.
The summit building contains an audiovisual show about the geological story of Canterbury that explains how the Port Hills were formed by an ancient volcano. Many visitors are surprised to learn that the harbour visible from the top is actually a flooded volcanic crater.
