Caccia Birch House, Heritage mansion in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
Caccia Birch House is a colonial mansion at 130 Te Awe Awe Street featuring walls and weatherboard made from native timber. The property spans three acres of maintained gardens and includes several buildings, among them the Coach House Museum.
A Danish architect designed the house in 1892 for a Norwegian sawmill owner. It briefly served as a government residence from 1908 to 1910 before being used for other purposes afterward.
The name reflects its previous owners, and their stories are told through exhibits in the Coach House Museum. Visitors can see old photographs and objects that reveal how different families shaped this place over time.
The property now serves as a venue for conferences and events managed by Palmerston North City Council. You should check ahead before visiting, as the site is mainly booked for private occasions.
The grounds contain old botanical specimens, including a wisteria vine over 100 years old and rare trees from America and the Himalayas. These botanical treasures are part of the older garden layout and often escape visitors' notice.
