Eden Park, Rugby union venue in Kingsland, Auckland, New Zealand
Eden Park is a rugby and cricket stadium in Kingsland, a suburb of Auckland, with several grandstands across different levels. The venue seats 50,000 people and consists of four main stands surrounding the oval playing field.
The ground opened in 1903 as a basic sports field on drained swampland. Multiple rebuilding projects over the twentieth century transformed it into the largest stadium in New Zealand.
The name comes from a nineteenth-century estate that once occupied this land before it became a sports ground. Spectators wear team colors and sing songs, and before international matches the traditional haka is performed on the field.
Visitors enter through the Walters Road gate and find access to different seating sections inside. Buses, trains and cars connect the ground to central Auckland.
The national rugby team has not lost here since 1994, a run of more than 50 consecutive wins. This streak makes the ground a particularly feared venue for visiting teams.
