Remuera Library, Arts and Crafts library in Remuera, New Zealand

Remuera Library is an Arts and Crafts building with high ceilings, large windows, and dark timber elements that define its interior spaces. An open floor plan allows different areas to flow together, creating flexible spaces for reading and gathering.

The building was designed in 1926 by architects Gummer and Ford and won a gold medal in 1928 from the New Zealand Institute of Architects. This achievement marked it as a model for modern library design in the country.

The library remains a social hub where neighbors gather for readings and community events throughout the year. It reflects how public buildings were meant to serve as meeting places for people from all walks of life.

The library sits on Remuera Road and serves residents from several nearby neighborhoods. The open spaces are easy to navigate and offer plenty of seating areas throughout.

A major renovation in 2002 carefully restored original architectural details while introducing contemporary features. A mezzanine added in the former stage area demonstrates how historic buildings can adapt to modern uses.
