Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery, Contemporary arts centre in Titirangi, Auckland, New Zealand
Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery is an arts centre housed in a modern six-story building with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the West Auckland landscape and surrounding native forest. The design creates strong connections between the indoor exhibition spaces and the natural setting beyond.
The gallery started in 1986 as part of Lopdell House, but was rebuilt and reopened in 2014 in a new structure designed by architects Mitchell & Stout. This move to a dedicated building allowed it to expand its role in the local arts community.
The name Te Uru comes from Te Hau a Uru, meaning wind from the west, and was chosen after talking with the local indigenous community Te Kawerau ā Maki. This connection reflects how the place is rooted in the land and the people around it.
The gallery sits on sloped terrain and is best reached by walking from the nearby car park, which requires some uphill effort depending on parking location. Once inside, elevators connect all levels, making movement between floors straightforward.
The space hosts the Portage Ceramic Awards, a major national competition that brings together ceramic works from artists throughout New Zealand. This makes it a significant gathering point for potters and ceramic art enthusiasts from across the country.
