Cuvier Island Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on Cuvier Island, New Zealand
Cuvier Island Lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower with a black lantern dome, rising about 15 meters above the island. The structure transmits navigation signals across a wide area, marking an important point for maritime traffic in the region.
The lighthouse was built in 1889 and was the first beacon in New Zealand constructed using cast iron materials. This building method represented a technological innovation and set new standards for lighthouse construction in the country.
Local Māori people call this Repanga Island, a name rooted in the area's connection to the region. You may encounter this alternative name on signs and in conversations with people from the community.
The beacon operates entirely on solar power with LED lights that flash white signals every 15 seconds. Visitors should be prepared for rough weather conditions and uneven terrain on the island.
Between 1899 and 1911, three lighthouse keeper families lived on the island and used trained carrier pigeons to send messages to Auckland. This unusual communication method was necessary because the location was otherwise difficult to reach.
