The Star, Casino and entertainment complex in Pyrmont, Australia
The Star is a large entertainment complex in Pyrmont with restaurants, bars, cafés, hotels, a spa, and various entertainment venues. The building at Pyrmont Street combines all these facilities in one location.
In December 1994 a consortium of Leighton Properties and Showboat won New South Wales' first casino licence. A temporary casino opened on former wharves 12/13 on 13 September 1995, inaugurated by Acting Prime Minister Kim Beazley. The permanent building, designed by Philip Cox with the American firm Hillier, opened on 27 November 1997 and was one of Australia's largest construction projects. In 2011 it reopened as The Star after a refurbishment.
The Event Centre and Sydney Lyric Theatre host theatre performances, concerts, and live shows throughout the year. These venues draw locals and visitors who gather to experience performances together.
The gaming floors sit on levels one and three; the Sovereign Room and Inner Sanctum are open only to members approved by management, so general visitors use the main floor. The complex faces Darling Harbour, with a harbour-side entrance and drop-off zone added in the 2009–2012 refurbishment. Bars inside the gaming area admit no one under 18.
Two-Up, a coin game played with two pennies, was offered here until October 2003, when it was dropped because it needed three dealers and two supervisors. The casino also trialled Double-Chance in December 2005; players nicknamed it 'No-Chance' for its high house advantage.
