Harrington's Buildings, hotel building in Sydney, Australia
Welcome to Harrington's Buildings, a historic hotel and former offices and store located at 53-65 George Street in the heart of The Rocks, an inner-city suburb of Sydney, Australia. This heritage-listed property was built between 1924 and 1925 by Concrete Constructions Limited and is now owned by Property NSW, an agency of the Government of New South Wales. Harrington's Buildings is also known as Old Sydney Holiday Inn and Old Sydney Park Royal Hotel. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 10 May 2002 and is part of the original grants to John Laurie in October 1816 and Robert Campbell in October 1834. The seven-storey Harrington's Building was approved by Sydney City Council on 17 May 1923 and completed in 1926. The building features a reinforced concrete frame and brick cladding, which was a modern construction technique for its time. Before the construction of Harrington's Buildings, the site was occupied by several buildings. In 1848, George Atherden, Robert Campbell's overseer, built three three-storey houses and shops at 53-55 George Street. These buildings were constructed with brick walls and shingled roofs with a semi-detached kitchen to the rear and were demolished between 1914 and 1916. The land at 2-8 Playfair Street was part of lots 8-13 of William Whaley Billyard's subdivision, and in 1875, the lots were conveyed to Thomas Playfair, James Rogers, and Alfred Augustus. Today, Harrington's Buildings is a popular destination for tourists visiting Sydney. The hotel offers comfortable accommodation in a historic setting, with easy access to some of the city's most famous landmarks and attractions. Visitors can explore The Rocks, a vibrant neighborhood filled with boutique shops, restaurants, and cafes. The area is also home to the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, and the Royal Botanic Garden, all of which are within walking distance of Harrington's Buildings. For those interested in history, a visit to the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art is a must-see. The museum features a collection of contemporary art from Australia and around the world, as well as exhibitions that explore the history and culture of the region. Overall, Harrington's Buildings is a unique and fascinating destination for anyone visiting Sydney. Whether you're interested in history, art, or simply want to experience the city's vibrant culture, this heritage-listed hotel is the perfect place to stay.
