Gap Park, Coastal park in Watsons Bay, New South Wales, Australia
Gap Park is a coastal park perched on the sandstone cliffs of South Head, near Watsons Bay in Sydney. Walking paths run along the cliff edge, offering open views over the ocean and the entrance to Sydney Harbour.
The park was established in 1887 as a public recreation area, starting with a few small cottages before native planting gradually took over. The Gap Bluff section remained military land until 1982, when it was handed over to the park service.
The park is easy to reach from Watsons Bay Wharf by ferry or bus, which makes it a good option for those without a car. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the park, and parking nearby is limited, so arriving by public transport is advisable.
A former tram route that once carried passengers to Watsons Bay was converted into a walking trail that now passes through a patch of bushland and a small rainforest section. Wooden boards are still laid over the roots of fig trees along part of the path, a remnant of the old tramway.
