J C Slaughter Falls, Cascade waterfall in Mount Coot-tha Forest, Brisbane, Australia
J C Slaughter Falls is a cascade waterfall in Mount Coot-tha Forest on the western edge of Brisbane, where Ithaca Creek flows through eucalyptus woodland. The site features picnic areas with covered tables and parking nearby.
The site saw military activity during World War II, which resulted in creek redirections and dam construction on Mount Coot-tha. These modifications permanently altered the water flow to this location.
The falls and surrounding picnic areas have served since the 1960s as a place where Brisbane residents connect with nature and spend time outdoors with family. Locals use this spot to step away from city life on weekends.
A walking track of about 700 meters (2,300 feet) leads from the parking area on Sir Samuel Griffith Drive down to the falls and is easy for most visitors to walk. The area has shaded tables for resting and picnicking.
The falls display their full force mainly between January and March when monsoon rains fill the creek. At other times the water flow is much lighter and less dramatic.
