Lake McKenzie is a freshwater lake located on K'gari within Great Sandy National Park in Queensland, ringed by white silica sand beaches. The water is remarkably clear and pure, creating transparent conditions, while sandy shores slope gently into the water at most points around the lake.
During World War II, a military training facility was established nearby and operated in 1944 before being abandoned. This wartime use marked a brief chapter in the area's more recent past, after which the focus shifted to conservation and recreation.
The Butchulla people, the original inhabitants of K'gari, hold this lake as part of their ancestral lands and continue to share their knowledge of the place with visitors. The connections between the land and its first people remain present in the names and stories connected to this location.
