Pic Malaoui, Mountain summit in Dumbea, New Caledonia.
Pic Malaoui is a summit in Dumbea that rises approximately 293 meters above sea level and features rocky terrain throughout. Steep paths cross the mountainside with natural rock formations visible across its slopes.
Colonial settlers gave the peak its alternative name Chapeau du Gendarme after noticing its shape resembled a traditional police hat. This name from the 1800s remains in use alongside its original designation.
The summit stands in Kanak territory, where local people maintain strong ties to the natural landscape and its features. The location forms part of how communities relate to their surrounding environment.
Starting early in the day works best for climbing this summit. Strong hiking boots and plenty of water are needed because the rocky ground can be steep and slippery throughout the ascent.
From the top, visitors can see several different plant zones and landscape types at once. This view clearly shows how varied New Caledonia's ecosystems are within a small area.
