Cairns Tropical Zoo, Wildlife sanctuary in Queensland, Australia
Cairns Tropical Zoo was a 6-hectare animal collection in Queensland that housed native Australian species including koalas, kangaroos, crocodiles, and tropical birds in natural settings. The facility closed in 2016 and relocated its animals to other Freeman family properties.
The Freeman family opened the facility in 1980 and developed it into the largest animal collection in Far North Queensland. Over three decades, the zoo became an important destination for wildlife viewing in the region before closing due to urban expansion.
The zoo served as a place where local people and visitors could encounter Australian animals up close through hands-on experiences. Educational shows and feeding demonstrations created a direct connection between people and the region's native species.
The facility has been closed since 2016 and is no longer open to visitors. Those interested in similar animal experiences can visit other Freeman family properties in the region, such as Hartley's Crocodile Adventures and Kuranda Koala Gardens.
The zoo was known for its crocodile collection, including some large specimens housed in specialized tanks. This reptile-focused collection set it apart from other Australian zoos of that era.
