Thursday Island, Administrative island in Torres Strait, Australia.
Thursday Island is an administrative island in the Torres Strait, located about 39 kilometers north of Cape York Peninsula, spanning roughly 3.5 square kilometers with its highest point at 104 meters. Port Kennedy, the main settlement, contains a sporting complex, library, health center, and multiple campuses of Tagai State College that serve the island's population.
The island was named by Captain Owen Stanley in 1848 and became a vital pearling center from 1884 onward, drawing workers from Japan, Malaya, and India. The pearling industry shaped the island's economy and social structure for many decades afterward.
The island is a meeting point for Torres Strait Islander, Malaysian, Chinese, Japanese, and Melanesian communities who shape daily life here. Torres Strait Creole is the main language heard in the streets and serves as a common thread connecting the island's diverse population.
Visits are possible year-round, though the warmest and most humid months require preparation for tropical weather. Bringing comfortable clothing, sun protection, and plenty of water helps make time on the island more pleasant.
Green Hill Fort, built in 1892 at the island's highest point, was constructed as a defense against a possible Russian invasion. This heritage structure offers a glimpse into a distinctive moment in Australian defense history.
