Nickerson Gardens is the largest public housing development west of the Mississippi River.
It was built during the 1950s for African American defense industry workers.
The area has a strong cultural significance in the hip hop music scene, being home to several notable rappers.
The housing complex includes 1,066 units and covers over 100 acres.
Despite its reputation for violence, Nickerson Gardens has also been a hub for community activism and programs.
