San Diego Repertory Theatre, Theater company and nonprofit organization in Downtown San Diego, United States.
San Diego Repertory Theatre is a nonprofit theatre company based in Downtown San Diego, operating inside the Lyceum Theatre complex. It runs two separate stages: a larger house that seats around 550 people and a smaller flexible space used for more intimate productions.
The company grew out of Indian Magique, a street theatre group that started in 1972 in San Diego. Sam Woodhouse and D.W. Jacobs then founded the current organization in 1976, giving it a permanent home and a broader programming vision.
The San Diego Repertory Theatre regularly programs works that reflect the many communities living in the city, from Latino to African American and Asian American voices. Audiences often encounter stories that feel rooted in San Diego life rather than drawn from a distant theatrical tradition.
The theatre sits in the heart of Downtown San Diego, making it easy to reach by trolley or bus from most parts of the city. Those arriving by car will find several parking structures within a short walk of the entrance.
The Lyceum Theatre complex was renovated in 2017, with both stages receiving updated technical systems and improved facilities for audiences. What many visitors do not know is that the name Lyceum comes from the ancient Greek school associated with Aristotle, giving this downtown venue an unexpectedly classical reference.
