Spreckels Organ Pavilion, Outdoor pipe organ in Balboa Park, San Diego, US
The Spreckels Organ Pavilion is a music venue with Italian Renaissance architecture that houses over five thousand pipes in an open-air setting. The ornamental structure stands in Balboa Park and creates an impressive concert space without a roof.
Brothers John and Adolf Spreckels donated the pavilion in 1914 for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. The instrument has been expanded multiple times since, showing the city's long commitment to music.
The name honors the Spreckels family who donated the instrument to the city. Visitors experience a living musical tradition here, where generations have gathered to listen to organ performances that bring people together.
The plaza offers space for visitors sitting on benches surrounding the pavilion. The best time to visit is Sunday afternoon when free concerts happen and the place is not crowded.
This is the largest outdoor organ in the world, with approximately eighty ranks of different sizes. Many visitors do not know that in addition to Sunday concerts, silent movies with organ accompaniment are shown on Monday evenings.
