Fort Bayard, Military fort in Grant County, New Mexico.

Fort Bayard is a former United States Army post 0.5 miles north of the junction of US Route 180 and New Mexico State Road 152, just north of Santa Clara. Of the 19th-century fort, only some landscaping and the Fort Bayard National Cemetery remain; the site now holds the state-run Fort Bayard Medical Center. A two-story dark brick building with a hipped roof, three chimneys and a one-story porch with white posts stands behind a low picket fence on a stone base.

Fort Bayard was established on August 21, 1866, to protect the Pinos Altos mines and settlers along the Apache Trail. It was named for Brigadier General George Dashiell Bayard, mortally wounded at Fredericksburg in 1862. In 1900 the post was transferred to the Army Surgeon General and converted into a tuberculosis hospital and research center; in 1919 it passed to the U.S. Public Health Service as Hospital No. 55, and in 1922 to the Veterans Bureau.

The fort's name honours Brigadier General George Dashiell Bayard, mortally wounded at Fredericksburg in 1862. A Buffalo Soldiers monument was placed on the old parade field in 1992. The site now operates as the Fort Bayard Medical Center, a state-run long-term nursing facility that also has a chemical dependency treatment centre.

Fort Bayard lies 0.5 miles north of the junction of US Route 180 and New Mexico State Road 152, near Bayard. The surviving 19th-century elements are the landscaping and the Fort Bayard National Cemetery; the medical center buildings are not open for general sightseeing. Tours of the historic area are arranged by request, so confirm arrangements before travelling.

The Buffalo Soldiers monument on the old parade field was erected in 1992. Corporal Clinton Greaves of C Company, 9th Cavalry Regiment, earned the Medal of Honor at Fort Bayard on January 24, 1877, for action against Apache raiders.
