The city was founded in 1685 when Spanish colonists relocated from Nueva Segovia to escape pirate raids. It was originally named San Antonio de Pavia before taking the name Estelí.
The municipality maintains strong connections with international communities through partnerships with cities like Bielefeld in Germany and Linköping in Sweden.
The city has an established water supply and sewage system serving most residential areas. Visitors can find basic services and local facilities for a comfortable stay.
The region is known for producing high-quality cigars, a tradition that began after the 1959 Cuban Revolution when cigar makers from Cuba settled here. This craft tradition has given the area a distinct economic and cultural profile.
