Elijio Panti National Park, National park in Cayo District, Belize.
Elijio Panti National Park is a protected area in Cayo District that encompasses mountainous terrain with waterfalls, natural pools, and an extensive cave system within dense forest. The reserve preserves these diverse landscapes together, from open water features to underground formations, all embedded in intact forest cover.
The park was officially established on February 23, 2001, following initiatives by the Itzamna Society to protect natural resources benefiting three local villages. This founding represented efforts to preserve the region's forests and geological features for the future.
The park features medicinal plant trails that showcase traditional Maya knowledge of healing herbs, honoring Don Elijio Panti, a respected healer from the region. Visitors can walk these paths today and learn how local people historically used the forest plants.
Visitors can participate in tubing, horseback riding, bird watching, camping, and hiking while observing native wildlife in their natural habitat. The best results for wildlife viewing occur in early morning and late afternoon hours when animals are most active.
The park features Sakt'aj Waterfall and ancient Maya ceremonial caves, combining natural geological wonders with archaeological sites within a single protected space. This blend of natural features and human history shows how the region has supported both elements for ages.
