Marquetalia Republic, Former autonomous territory in Tolima Department, Colombia.
Marquetalia Republic was a self-governed territory in the mountainous Gaitania region within Planadas municipality in Tolima Department. The terrain consisted of rugged highlands that served as a base for rural communities resisting central authority.
The area emerged in the 1950s as a zone where peasant groups operated outside state control. In May 1964 the Colombian government launched a massive military operation involving thousands of troops to reclaim the territory.
The region symbolized peasant resistance against state control and shaped rural Colombian politics in ways that communities still remember today.
The site is accessible through Planadas municipality and requires hiking along mountain paths with local guidance. Being remote, visitors should expect challenging terrain and limited facilities in the area.
After the military operation survivors and displaced members founded a new armed movement that would later become FARC. This founding moment marked a turning point in Colombian conflict history.
