Santiago Santamaría established Jericó in 1850, and the settlement gained municipality status in 1851, later becoming a department capital in 1908.
The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, built in 1949, serves as the main religious center for the Roman Catholic Diocese.
The municipality connects to Medellín through a 104-kilometer road network, providing access for its 12,103 residents and visitors.
The birthplace of Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena houses multiple museums, including the Museo Antropologico y de Arte and Casa Museo de Santa Laura.
