Puinawai Natural Reserve

The reserve encompasses 10,925 square kilometers of Amazon region terrain, featuring tropical rainforests, rivers, and open savannas between 200 and 380 meters elevation.

The Colombian government established Puinawai Natural Reserve in September 1989, concurrent with the formation of three major indigenous territories in the region.

Multiple indigenous communities maintain their traditional methods of natural resource management within the boundaries of this protected natural space.

The reserve contains four major rivers: the Cuyari, Isana, and Guainía flowing to the Amazon basin, while the Inírida River connects to the Orinoco basin.

The area holds 419 plant species native to the region, with 176 of these plants found exclusively within the Guyana Shield geological formation.
