Madrid, Municipality in Cundinamarca, Colombia
Madrid is a municipality in the Western Savanna Province of Cundinamarca, located about 21 kilometers from Bogotá. The area covers 120.5 square kilometers at an elevation of 2,554 meters, connecting the highlands with northern regions.
The area was originally called La Serrezuela until it was renamed in 1875 to honor Pedro Fernández Madrid. In the 20th century, the town developed into a center for military training through the Air Force Academy.
The name honors Pedro Fernández Madrid, a Colombian intellectual whose influence shaped the town in 1875. Today, locals gather at the Church of San Francisco de Paula, which has anchored religious life since the 17th century.
The municipality sits along the main highway to Medellín, which travelers use between Bogotá and northern areas. The elevation brings cooler weather than lower Colombian regions.
The Academy of Subofficers of the Colombian Air Force operates here, training military personnel. Visitors occasionally see practice flights over the municipal area.
