La Unión is a mountain municipality in Antioquia situated at about 2,500 m elevation, defined by its mountain ranges and numerous waterfalls. The terrain spreads across the Buey River basin, creating a landscape with varying climate zones that support different types of crops.
The settlement started in 1778 as Vallejuelo, then was formally established as a district in 1877 when territories from La Ceja and El Carmen de Viboral were combined. This merger created the foundation for the present-day administrative structure.
