La Frontera Formation, Geological formation in Eastern Ranges of Colombian Andes.
La Frontera Formation is a geological layer found in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes. It consists of limestone and marine sediments visible across the Altiplano Cundiboyacense region.
A geologist named Hubach first documented the formation in 1931. It received its official name in 1969, taking its title from the La Frontera quarry near Albán in Cundinamarca.
The formation serves as an educational center where Colombian universities conduct field studies to train future geologists in stratigraphic analysis techniques.
Access to the formation is available from multiple locations, including the Ubaté-Carmen de Carupa road and areas north of the Bogotá savanna. Visitors should be prepared for rough terrain and wear appropriate footwear.
This formation holds fossils of marine creatures from the Late Cretaceous, including several types of ammonites. These petrified remains are about 93.9 million years old and reveal what ancient seas once covered this region.
