Desafío 2021: The Box, Television competition set in Tobia, Colombia
Desafío 2021: The Box is a television production recorded in Tobia near Bogotá, where competitions take place in a specially built compound set within dense rainforest. The construction includes five elevated structures around 12 meters high that blend into the tropical vegetation.
The show relocated its 17th season in 2021 from international locations to Colombia as travel abroad became difficult due to the health crisis. This decision led to the first fully domestic production in the series.
The show organizes participants from across Colombia into regional teams, allowing audiences nationwide to experience traditions and characteristics from the Amazon, the Andes, the coast and the plains. Each team brings its own customs and ways of speaking, making the country's diversity tangible on screen.
The production required extensive lighting equipment with hundreds of stage lights and a large crew including many local workers from nearby Tobia and Nimaima communities. The facility is designed for difficult terrain and tropical conditions.
Competitors move through five different elevation levels within the compound, while certain areas shift between beach and low zone configurations depending on the challenge. These adaptable spaces can be reconfigured for different types of competition.
