Usaquén, Colonial neighborhood in northern Bogotá, Colombia.
Description
Usaquén is a neighborhood in northern Bogotá, Colombia, that grew from a former settlement. Galleries, antique shops, fashion boutiques and international restaurants line the paved streets.
History
The area functioned as an independent municipality until 1954, when it was incorporated into the capital. The incorporation brought urban growth while colonial structures remained in the old core.
Culture
The Sunday market transforms the streets and squares into a gathering of stalls with local produce and handmade goods. Residents meet in the cafés and small parks that surround the old center.
Practical
Several bus lines connect the neighborhood to the city center, and parking facilities are located near shops and restaurants. On Sundays foot traffic increases and streets become narrower.
Did you know?
The Hacienda Santa Bárbara from 1847 was converted into a shopping center that kept colonial facades and inner courtyards. Visitors can walk between modern shops and historical walls.
