Sogamoso Dam, Embankment dam and hydroelectric station in Bucaramanga region, Colombia
The Sogamoso Dam is a concrete-face rockfill embankment that stretches 345 meters across the Sogamoso River in the Santander region. The facility includes three generator units that provide electricity to surrounding regions through a hydroelectric power station.
Construction began in 2009 with the first generator becoming operational in 2014. The project represented a major step forward in power generation capacity for the region.
The development required relocating 160 families from the area, leading to discussions about infrastructure changes and community adaptations in northern Colombia.
The dam is located in the Santander region and is accessible by road from nearby highways. Visitors should be prepared for hilly terrain and variable weather conditions in the area.
The facility houses the largest bridge cranes manufactured in Colombia, with a lifting capacity of 332 tons and a span length of 22.1 meters.
