Amalfi, Mountain municipality in Northeastern Antioquia, Colombia
Amalfi is a mountain municipality in northeastern Antioquia situated at approximately 1550 meters elevation. The town occupies a valley setting within Colombia's central highlands, surrounded by sloped terrain and natural water sources.
The municipality was founded in 1838 when Father José Santamaría y Zola led settlers into the Riachón River Valley. The town grew as mining opportunities brought waves of arrivals from different backgrounds throughout the following decades.
The town reflects the heritage of Spanish, Syrian, Lebanese, and West African families who settled here over generations. Their presence shaped the local character and community traditions that visitors can sense today.
The town is accessible by road from Medellín through mountain routes in northern Antioquia. The terrain is steep and weather conditions vary, so visitors should dress in layers and be prepared for rain at higher elevations.
Archaeological findings reveal human settlement in the area dating back about 15,000 years. These traces show ancient migration paths that connected the Andes to the Caribbean coast.
