Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy, Minor basilica in Yarumal, Colombia
The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy is a minor basilica in the center of Yarumal, Colombia, built in Renaissance Revival style. It has a rectangular central nave flanked by two domed towers, and its facade is made of stone, brick, and plaster arranged in a classical composition.
Construction started in 1866 to serve a growing town, and the project faced civil wars and an earthquake before it was finally finished in the mid-20th century. The building received the title of minor basilica after its completion, recognizing its role in the region.
The basilica is dedicated to the patron saint of Yarumal, and her image appears throughout the interior in paintings, sculptures, and decorative details. On feast days, the square in front of the building fills with people who come to attend mass or simply gather near the church.
The basilica stands on the main square of Yarumal and is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the town center. Visiting outside of mass times allows a quieter look at the interior, and modest dress is expected inside.
A pipe organ made in Germany in 1963 sits inside the church, with over 1000 pipes that can reproduce the sounds of several different instruments at once. Instruments of this origin and size are rarely found in churches across this part of Colombia.
