Yarumal, Mountain municipality in Antioquia Department, Colombia.
Yarumal is a municipality set in the mountains of Antioquia at an elevation of about 2,265 meters, spreading across hilly terrain. The urban center contains several parishes and numerous villages that together make up the municipality.
The settlement was originally founded in 1787 and was initially named San Luis de Gongora at that time. It was later renamed to its current name and received its municipal status in 1821.
The name comes from the yarumo tree, a type of fig tree that grows throughout the surrounding forests and shapes the area's appearance. You can spot these trees everywhere as you move through the municipality.
The location sits in the mountains and is surrounded by densely forested hills that remain green throughout the year. Visitors arriving here should expect cool weather and frequent rainfall.
Medical researchers focus on this area because of an unusually high occurrence of early-onset neurological conditions linked to a specific genetic trait. The population thus contributes to important medical research studies.
